Tips to make teeth-brushing fun for kids
If you’re a parent, you know getting kids to brush their teeth isn’t always easy. We’ve all tried different tricks to make it fun—some work, some don’t!
As experts in children’s dentistry, we can’t stress enough how important it is to teach kids good oral hygiene habits from an early age. At The Practice, our dentists see how much of a difference it makes when children grow up with a positive attitude towards dental care.
So what’s the secret? Making it fun, keeping it age appropriate and allowing it to be something they look forward to rather than a chore.
Here are some fun ideas to help encourage your children to want to brush their teeth:
Let them choose their own toothbrush and toothpaste
The first step is letting your children play a role in choosing their toothbrush and toothpaste. Whether it’s choosing their favourite colour, or cartoon character, giving them a say will make them more excited about using it. There are so many different kinds of ‘kid-friendly’ toothpaste available now (in all sorts of fruity flavours), so letting them pick a flavour they like will make it less likely they will kick up a fuss when it’s time to brush.
Turn brushing into a game
Kids love games, and there’s no reason why teeth brushing can’t be fun! Here’s a few tips on how to turn teeth brushing (and flossing) into a game:
- Set a timer and challenge them to brush until the alarm goes off.
- Use an app or brushing songs to guide them through the 2 minutes of brushing.
- Pretend their brushing away plaque monsters and they have to defeat the bad guys living in their mouths.
Brush your teeth together
Kids learn from the adults around them, so watching others is a great way for them to get more excited about brushing. Brushing your teeth at the same time not only models the right technique, but turns it into a shared activity rather than a chore. Laugh, sing, or make funny faces in the mirror together.
Use a reward system
Reward systems work really well with children. Why not create a brushing chart where your child earns a sticker each time they brush? After a full week of brushing twice a day, reward them with a small prize, a fun activity, or anything else they love.
Embrace imagination
Young children have great imaginations, so telling a story about teeth-brushing and making it the hero can help kids get more excited and look forward to this part of their day.
Break it down into steps
If you have younger children, the process of flossing and brushing can be a little too much for some. Try breaking it down into steps: First, we floss, we rinse, put toothpaste on, brush the top teeth, brush the bottom teeth, and the tongue – and rinse again!
For parents, it’s important to stay consistent. Even on the days when your children feel tired or grumpy you must be patient and stick to the same rules and routine. This will help it become a natural part of their day.
