The benefits of chewing gum

  • Stimulates saliva flow: Chewing gum can neutralise acids, wash away food particles, and strengthen enamel. 
  • Freshens breath: Especially sugar-free gum containing xylitol.
  • Can reduce dry mouth symptoms: Great for people on certain medications.
  • Improves focus and reduces stress: Many people believe chewing gum has stress-relief benefits.

As a dentist, we know that saliva is one of the mouth’s best natural defences. What does saliva do? It helps to neutralise acids produced by bacteria, washes away leftover food particles, and delivers minerals like calcium and phosphate that strengthen tooth enamel. 

By stimulating saliva, for example, by chewing gum, you can help maintain good oral health.

Which chewing gum should I choose? 

If you’re going to chew gum, ALWAYS choose sugar-free options, ideally those containing xylitol. Xylitol not only replaces sugar but also helps reduce cavity-causing bacteria. Brands like Extra, Orbit, and Eclipse offer xylitol-based gums that are the best choice. 

The downside of chewing gum

There are also some downsides to chewing gum:

  • Jaw strain and TMJ issues: Excessive chewing can overwork the jaw muscles.
  • Digestive discomfort: Swallowing too much air.
  • Hidden sugars: Regular gum can feed bacteria and cause decay.
  • Masking issues: Gum can cover up halitosis or decay symptoms that need treatment.

Constantly chewing gum can become a problem. You can overuse your jaw muscles, causing soreness and even contribute to TMJ (temporomandibular joint) discomfort – especially if you already clench or grind your teeth.  

Regular gum contains sugar, and frequent chewing means more bacteria to produce acid, which increases your risk of cavities and enamel erosion. The secret is moderation. Chewing gum itself isn’t bad for your teeth, and sugar-free varieties have some benefits, but it should never replace brushing, flossing, or regular dental care.

The best way to chew gum

Want to know the best way to chew gum? Here are some tips from the dentists at our West End dental practice:

  • Choose sugar-free gum with xylitol.
  • Limit to 10 to 15 minutes after meals.
  • Don’t chew gum if you have jaw pain or clicking.
  • Never replace brushing or flossing with gum.
