Why choose an oral health therapist in Brisbane for preventive dental care
Most people associate a visit to the dentist with fixing a problem, maybe a sore tooth, broken filling or crown.
But perhaps the most important dental care happens long before the problem occurs. That’s where an oral health therapist comes in.
At The Practice, we’re strong believers in preventative dental care. Our oral health therapist works closely with our West End dentists to keep your teeth and gums healthy, identifying issues before they become worse and start to cause more serious problems.
If you’re looking for an oral health therapist in West End, understanding their role can help you get the most out of every visit to the dentist.
What does an oral health therapist do?
An oral health therapist is a university-qualified dental professional who focuses on preventive dental care, gum health and helping patients look after their smiles.
Yes, professional teeth cleans are part of what they do, but their role goes far beyond removing plaque and tartar. During your appointment, your oral health therapist will assess your teeth and gums, monitor any changes since your last visit, look for the early signs of tooth decay or gum disease and help you understand what’s happening in your mouth.
More than just a professional clean
You might assume that everyone gets the same dental advice, but the reality is – every mouth is different. Some people naturally build up more tartar, others have teeth that are harder to clean because they are crowded and difficult to reach with a toothbrush. Medical conditions, medications, pregnancy and even stress can all affect your oral health.
That’s why appointments with our oral health therapist are personalised. They don’t offer the same advice to everyone, they look at what’s happening in your mouth and guide you with advice that’s right for you.
You may need to adjust your brushing technique, or need to use an interdental brush instead of floss. Small changes to your dental care routine can make a big difference over time.
Prevention is always better than treatment
If you asked our oral health therapist about the best part of their job, they’ll probably say it’s helping patients avoid bigger dental problems with preventative dental care. Regular visits allow you to monitor your oral health over time and identify changes before they become painful or require more complex treatment.
Catching a small issue early is almost always easier, more comfortable and more affordable than waiting until it becomes a bigger issue.
