Preventative dentistry – the key to a healthy smile

We all want a beautiful smile, but achieving a healthy smile is just as important! Maintaining your oral health can benefit your overall well-being and preventative dental is critical for good oral health.

Preventative dentistry is the best way to prevent dental problems before they occur and it may minimise the need for more complex dental treatment. Preventive dental care can help you maintain a beautiful, healthy smile for years to come.

Types of preventative dental care

With a few simple steps you can maintain the health of your teeth and gums and minimise the need for complex dental treatment.

Regular dental check-ups:

One of the best things you can do to prevent complex dental treatment is to book regular appointments at your dentist. At The Practice, we recommend visiting your dentist every six months to maintain your oral health.

At your regular dental appointments your dentist will examine your teeth and gums and look for signs of decay, cavities, gum disease and any other dental issues. By checking for these problems regularly, you can catch potential issues early before they develop into something more serious.

Daily brushing and flossing:

A huge part of preventative dental care is brushing and flossing your teeth daily. It’s the cornerstone of good oral hygiene. You should brush your teeth, with either a manual or electric toothbrush at least twice a day, for two minutes at a time. Flossing once a day will remove plaque and food particles from between your teeth, lowering the chance of gum disease.

Use a fluoride toothpaste:

As one of the most common dental hygiene products, fluoride toothpaste helps to prevent tooth decay and strengthen tooth enamel. It helps keep teeth healthy and strong to prevent cavities.

Minimise foods high in sugar and acid:

Frequently eating foods which are high in sugar and acid can damage your teeth and result in decay and cavities. Our dentists recommend you limit the amount of sugary and acidic foods and drinks and always rinse your mouth with water after consuming them.

Wear a mouthguard when playing sport:

If you’re playing a sport or doing an activity which could lead to a dental injury, always wear a mouthguard. A mouthguard will protect your teeth and gums from damage and help you avoid complex dental procedures.

At The Practice, we provide custom-made mouthguards in a variety of colours and sizes.

Professional teeth cleaning:

Professional teeth cleaning helps to remove tartar that causes gum disease, cavities and bad breath. As preventative dentistry, professional teeth cleaning is recommended at your regular six-monthly appointment.
