All-on-X Dental Implants Explained

When you’re missing several teeth, or even a full arch, dentures can seem like the likely solution. But have you heard of All-on-X dental implants?

All-on-X dental implants are a technique that’s changing the way people think about full-arch tooth replacement. It gives individuals a stable, natural-looking smile without all the hassles of traditional dentures.

At our West End dental practice, we see how life-changing this treatment can be, not just for your oral health, but for your confidence and quality of life.

What are All-on-X dental implants?

All-on-X (often called All-on-4 or All-on-5) is a technique used to replace all teeth using just four or five dental implants. Instead of placing an implant for every missing tooth, we place a few implants strategically in the jawbone, and those act as the foundation for a full arch of replacement teeth, whether that’s a single tooth or a bridge of multiple teeth.

What makes this technique special? The back implants are placed on an angle (up to 45 degrees), which often means no bone grafting is needed and helps us avoid important areas like the sinuses and nerves.

Once we have your implants in, we’ll attach your new prosthetic teeth and you’ll walk away with a brand-new smile.

How does All-in-X compare to dentures?

If you know traditional dentures, you’ll know they can slip, feel bulky, and make eating or speaking difficult. All-on-X is different:

  • Stable and secure – No slipping or clicking.
  • Comfortable – Feels more like natural teeth.
  • Immediate results – Teeth can often be fitted the same day.
  • Bone health – Helps preserve jawbone and facial structure.
  • Confidence – Smile, laugh, and eat without worry.

Another option – Implant-supported dentures

At The Practice, we also offer implant-supported dentures in our West End dental clinic. These are a type of over-denture that’s supported by implants instead of relying on the gums alone. They’re great for patients who have lost all their teeth in an arch but still have enough jawbone to support implants.

Implant-supported dentures are most commonly used for the lower jaw (where traditional dentures can be unstable), but they can also be used in the upper jaw. They give you extra security compared to regular dentures, while still being removable when needed.

What does the All-on-X implant process look like?

Here’s what you can expect:

  1. Consultation: We use scans and imaging to assess your bone and plan where to place the implants.
  2. Implant placement: Four or five titanium implants are placed into the jawbone, with the back implants tilted to maximise stability.
  3. Immediate teeth: A prosthesis (your new set of teeth) is attached.
  4. Healing: Over the next few months, your implants bond with your jawbone in a process called osseointegration.
  5. Final restoration: Once fully healed, your permanent prosthesis is fitted for long-term comfort and durability.

Is All-on-X right for you?

This treatment is a great option if you:

  • Have multiple missing or failing teeth.
  • Want to avoid removable dentures.
  • Have enough bone to support implants.
  • Are looking for a long-term, stable solution.

Our dentists are here to guide you to make the right decision. During your consultation, we’ll look at unique conditions and help you decide whether All-on-X, implant-supported dentures, or another option is right for you.

What about recovery?

Like any dental procedure, you need time to heal. You may have a little swelling or tenderness, but most patients are surprised at how manageable it is. Because your new teeth are attached straight away, you won’t have to go without a smile during the healing process.

The results

Being able to eat comfortably, speak clearly, and smile without worry makes a world of difference. With the right care, implants can last for many years, making them a great investment in both your oral health and your well-being.
